The question: “One would think that since we’ve come so far as to have a black president we wouldn’t need award programs where the winners have to be of a particular ethnicity. Imagine the hate and protest that would come if there was a White Entertainment Television channel and awards ceremony, or a White Miss America Pageant. Are these ethnic-centered events still needed? Are they racist? What are your thoughts?”
My first thought is why do some white people feel the need to make themselves arbitrators of what is and isn’t racist. They almost seem to believe that if they don’t see racism it must not exist, and furthermore, they only see it when it involves something they aren’t included in. Never mind (and willfully overlooking) that this exclusion is something that their ancestors began and that still goes on every day in all facets of life (but then, if they don’t see or experience it, it must not happen, right?). Never mind that this first black president who has magically eliminated all racism in the minds and hearts of all people has gotten more death threats than our last few presidents combined.
Maurcie Broaddus discusses this at great length.
I’m not going to say, as he did, that certain people aren’t racist. Personally, I don’t know. But I do know that it takes a special kind of person to blame those that have been oppressed instead of...oh, I don't know the oppressors. Guess it's easier than looking in a mirror.
Since Maurice discussed it, I’m not gonna tread there—it’s been said to death and if these people really cared to know, they could have easily researched. No, instead I’m sure they saw an easy in to expound on some pure racist shit that they may not have felt comfortable saying elsewhere. Or who knows, they may say it all the time and haven’t been called on it, or they just don’t care. Either way, I’m not anyone’s Negro Tudor and it’s not my job to teach them they’re full of shit.
Instead I’ll quote some of my favorite lines from the posters:
“What would we have on wet (White Entertainment Television)? The brady bunch? there is not really any “white” tv shows.” In other words, shows with mostly black characters are black shows, but shows with mostly white characters are not white shows.
“I don’t see how self-segregating equalizes anything. Don’t whine to me about wanting equality and then set yourself completely apart.” Whine to HER about wanting equality? Really… So, PoC don’t automatically deserve “equality” we have to beg individual white people for it. There are no words…
And my personal favorite: “Dude… You are so not the first person to make this observation… Try being a high school senior and you don’t qualify for a certain scholarship because you’re white… Been there…” This person qualified for other scholarships but this ONE and now all of a sudden they’re oppressed. Please.
Yeah, no time for silliness. My Facebook response.

yeah, that's a bunch of bullshit right there you lying fucking homophobe, and i'm not even touching on the racist shit you've said before, steve.
unlike you, my convictions won't let me overlook that sort of shit.
i've always been completely open about my real name on the internet, so it's pretty odd that you would even make a claim like that.
but, whatever, i get it- i offend your delicate sensibilities by actually being effected by issues while you, hypocritically i might add, are the one who actually pretends to have some sort of moral superiority.
so, yeah, as a guy who likes cock (oh no, more bad words! how *dare* i!) i'm genuinely offended and oppressed by folks like steve who spew homophobic filth at every chance he gets so, no, i'm not going to be a good little fag and roll over for it just because you think it's wrong that anyone who's actually offended dare get angry about something.
i have way more important things to do than deal with your concern trolling and moral high horse bullshit white knighting, greg.
i get it, anyone who wants actual real social justice and change is the villain for being so mean to the poor little bigots.
so, really, there's no reason to fill chesya's inbox with more of your faux sense of moral superiority and it's really just an absurd waste of time to try and engage you on any subject when you just feel like trolling, so have a GREAT day, greg!
"All Your Radical Ideas Have Already Occurred To Others", both to the original poster, and to you...
Which isn't so much to say that anyone's opinion is wrong, just that we have heard this all before.
For the record, I support the position that those things might be seen as silly, but since there is hundreds of years of history of racism in America, the entrenched structure of discrimination is a real thing and things like scholarships and active recruiting of minorities are needed to combat it.
But again, its not so much that that is my opinion as that I kind of understand the complexity of the question.
Also, BET sucks.
Regarding the meat of your entry ... ugh, I'm sorry you had to come across that BS. White people (and I say this as a white person) can be so darn hurtful and ignorant of our privilege. I hope your day runs better.
I think all women anthos are great, all black, all whatever. Like Beth Massie said on FB, to me, we're celebrating said focal point of said antho, channel, film, et al, we're not promoting racism or prejudice by having BET or the Women's Channel. If someone chooses to exclude based on sex or color or sexual identity, whatever that be, that's a personal ignorant choice they've made, a racist or prejudiced choice, but we'd be scapegoating if we blamed people's individual biases on a channel, award show, antho 'promoting' said prejudice by honoring an achievement / people / movement. Saying BET promotes racism, or Womens TV promotes sexism, is as bad as saying, "Look! He's white and only watches NBC. He must hate minorities!"
I will admit something here some other white folks might frown at me for: I'm ashamed of my ethnicity for some of the things we've done, especially in colonial times. And I can't help but think, when someone says something like: "BET is the rumblings of reverse racism." That we white people cannot, for one moment, fathom what it was like--still is--to live as a minority in a white dominated culture, so do any of us really have a right to whine about BET or what have you? No white man has ever been told he can't sit on a bus because of the color of his skin (all based on levels of melanin (sp?) How ridiculous; let's subjugate over pigment! Yeesh.); no white male has ever been told he can't make it to management because he's one of 'those people' (in this case, a black female with kids to feed); no white male has ever had a history where his gran can tell him how his ancestors were taken out of their homelands in chains and spiked neck manacles, made to row large ships until they dropped dead.
Because the colonists did this. Oh, we white folks can bitch and moan all we like "It wasn't me though!" but it was your ethnicity, the people of your heritage, who committed these atrocities against other humans. White folks would do well to get rid of the last vestiges of the colonial mindset, swallow a nice big humility pill, and realize the time of empire building is--and should be--behind us.
Take care, Chesya and everyone.
PS --Not saying Steve W. is promoting the things I outlined above, per se, but just we white folks need to take a step back and remember all the oppressive things we've done in our history.
Louise
I have added you after reading your comment on Karnythia's 'submission' post. I would like to continue reading what you have to say and to enjoy your writing style, even if all that I get to see are the public posts.
